Escaping Your Past

Escaping your past will not be easy, and it will never be completely eliminated. However, the effects of something hurtful in your past can be lessened and with a new focus, canbecome a stepping stone to a different and more fulfilling life.

“Every journey starts with a single step.” ~ Chinese Proverb

Most of us have heard this saying in some form or another before. You may have heard it put this way:

“If you want something you’ve never had before, you must do something you’ve never done before.”

While there is some truth to each of these proverbs, their focus is on your doing something, making a move in one way or another. And while there is a requirement for each of us who want a difference to occur in our lives to make some type of change in our habits, there’s something more basic to change our lives. Let’s try to rephrase these sayings:

“Every change starts with change as to how and what we think.”

That’s what escaping your past is really about.

Sounds sensible. If you think about it, every journey first starts with a thought, a desire or an idea. And if one truly wants something that they’ve never had before, similarly a thought, a new idea, a new hope needs to be formed first. That is and always will be the first step in redefining some part of your life. If the status quo was fulfilling this conversation wouldn’t be of interest to you.

However, if you understand that you can’t continue to live as you have, with whatever pressures, pains, guilt or self-neglect that may be haunting you, then a new goal must be formulated. And it’s careful attention to the formulation of that goal that is of prime importance.

There is a way of escaping your past but it won’t fall in your lap.  Escaping your past is of utmost necessary to avoid being merely someone else on earth who took up space.
